FAQ

Q. I'm left-handed. Should I learn right-handed?

A. It's completely up to you, though it's best to stick with one way, and I'd personally recommend embracing your leftiness as it will make a lot of things much easier for you.

Q. Should I learn acoustic or electric?

A. There is an old myth that acoustic is easier and should be mastered before picking up an electric, but most people would now argue more the reverse - electric guitars have thinner necks, can have lighter gauge strings and you can play with an amp and effects so you'll sound really cool in no time!

Q. Should I get a guitar before even starting lessons?

A. Yes, absolutely! There is no greater supplement to learning than being able to go home and practice everything you've just learnt.

Q. Am I too old to learn?

A. 80 is the new 18! About half of the students I've taught over the years have been retirees - it's a brilliant age to dive into new hobbies and skills.

Q. What guitar should I get?

A. Whatever guitar you like! Something that excites or interests you or just looks plain cool. When you've played for a while, you'll have a better idea of what you want from a guitar, but for now, just grab anything.

Q. Should/can I take graded exams?

A. Grades are a good, structured way to push yourself and your abilities, but hey, they're not for everyone - I support both grades and less formal paths.
